How it works
You can apply for an emergency travel visa (sometimes referred to as an ’emergency passport’) if you are overseas and unable to obtain a passport in time.
If you are currently in the United Kingdom, you should apply for a passport immediately.
Eligibility
If all of the following apply, you may apply for an emergency visa:
- You are a British citizen.
- You are not in the United Kingdom.
- Your passport has been lost, stolen, or destroyed; it is now full; it has recently expired; or it is in the possession of the HM Passport Office or a foreign embassy.
- You do not have enough time before your trip to renew or replace your passport.
You may offer evidence of your trip arrangements, such as booking confirmations (or detailed written travel plans if you cannot book ahead).
Generally, if you have never held a British passport, you cannot obtain an emergency visa for UK. Instead, you should apply for a passport.
What a travel emergency document enables you to do
You can travel to your destination using an emergency visa through a maximum of five countries. If you live in the country from which you applied, you can even use it to return there. On your emergency visa, your travel arrangements (countries and dates) will be printed. If your trip plans change after you receive your emergency visa, you must apply for a new one.
You may require a visa in order to exit the nation in which you are now located or to travel through other countries with your UK emergency visa. Consult each country’s embassy or consulate. If your intended destination is the United Kingdom, border officials will retain your emergency visa. The document may also be retained by border officials at a different final destination.
